Star-Lord and the gang will be coming home very soon. Marvel has announced the release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on Disney+. The hit Marvel Cinematic Universe installment is set to debut on the service on August 2. It will join the other Guardians films on the streaming service, completing the trilogy for subscribers. It also will open the movie up to a much wider audience a few months removed from the theatrical release.Â

Director James Gunn’s GOTG3 was a big hit for Marvel Studios and Disney. The film was met with very strong reviews when it was released in May. It is intended to serve as a goodbye to this version of the Guardians, which made it an emotional event for fans. To date, the movie has earned $843 million at the global box office. That makes it the second highest-grossing movie of the year, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That means it figures to be in high demand on Disney+ as well.Â
Here is the synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.Â
“In Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
The cast includes Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Zoe Saldana, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter, Maria Bakalova and Chukwudi Iwuji. Gunn wrote the script in addition to directing. This will be his last gig at Marvel (at least for a while) as he is now the co-head of DC Studios. He is set to direct Superman: Legacy, which is hitting theaters in 2025.Â
As for whether or not the Guardians will continue in some form without Gunn, that remains unclear. Marvel’s slate has been set for the rest of Phase 5 and 6, which will take us through May 2027, as it stands. However, Deadpool 3 recently had to stop filming due to the actor’s strike, which has effectively shut down Hollywood. Depending on how long that lasts, the slate could be delayed into 2028. The next MCU film due to hit theaters is The Marvels in November.Â
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives on Disney+ on August 2.Â
