Deadpool is on its Way Toward…the Academy Awards?

Last week, we learned that Deadpool was nominated for a  Writers Guild of America Award in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay. Sure, this might mean nothing to some – but, given the other movies nominated in the same category (Arrival, Fences, Hidden Figures, and Nocturnal Animals), this is quite an achievement for a comic book movie that nobody really expected to work.

The winner will be announced on the 19th of February.

And then came the Golden Globes, for which Deadpool scored two nominations. The first was for Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy, while the second was for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy (Ryan Reynolds, of course, who should receive an award just for the amount of work he put into marketing the movie).

Unfortunately, it lost in both categories to La La Land (and Ryan Gosling).

Today brings even more great news for the Deadpool fans out there: The movie has been nominated for a PGA (Producers Guild of America) award. These awards are great indicators of the possibility of Academy Award nominations.

Again, Deadpool shares its nomination with quite a few impressive movies: Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight (which won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Drama).

Given these impressive nominations, many believe that the Merc with a Mouth has a good chance of receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Picture (or at least make the shortlist). If this happens, it would certainly be a first, since no other live action superhero movie has been nominated in this category. That ceremony will take place on the the 26th of February.

So what do you think? Will Deadpool score an Academy Award nomination in this category?
