Spawn is Happening; McFarlane to Write and Direct

Creator Todd McFarlane has promised fans a suitably dark, gritty, and R-rated Spawn reboot for the past few years. McFarlane continued the tease into this year, announcing that the script was finished and he was waiting for a studio to make him an offer. And just a couple of weeks ago, he announced  that the movie would only be made if certain conditions were met.

McFarlane said that any studio interested in making the film would have to accept him as writer, producer, and director. Given the fact that his experience as a director consists of a couple of music videos, it seemed highly unlikely that any studio would agree to such conditions. McFarlane was certainly aware of that, and said that he'd be willing to work with a $10 million budget.

Apparently, McFarlane convinced one studio there are enough Spawn followers to warrant a movie. This has been confirmed by various outlets – including Entertainment Weekly, Deadline, and The Wrap – all of which have announced that Spawn is currently in development at Blumhouse.

Blumhouse has made a name for itself with low-budget horror flicks such as Paranormal Activity, Sinister, Split, and Get Out. The studio also produced Whiplash, which earned five Academy Award nominations and won three Oscars.

The movie, which will indeed be written and directed by McFarlane, was announced at San Diego Comic Con. Given his previous statements, combined with the films Blumhouse has made so far, it’s safe to assume that the Spawn reboot will be rated R.

We’ve had no word on the movie’s budget, but based on the information we do have, we assume that it won't be that big.
