Viola Davis Explains Why She “Loved” Playing Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad!

Viola Davis might have been in Hollywood for two decades, but this year, we saw her for the first time in a superhero movie. The two-time Academy Award nominee appeared in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad as Amanda Waller – a character that sometimes appears to be a protagonist and sometimes an antagonist, but is always a very powerful one.

In a recent interview with Variety, Davis talked about how she felt about the August 5, 2016 release and her character. According to the 51-year-old actress:

I loved it. And I think I loved it because I didn’t think that deeply about it. I just thought it was fun. What was fun to me about Amanda Waller — who is heavy, pearls, Afro — she has no superhuman strength, but absolutely just puts fear into the hearts of all these villains. That appeals to me greatly. There’s something about her for me that was familiar. I was working out the bad girl, but from a space that, for me, is based somewhat in reality. I liked playing with that power. It’s something so often not given to women, that kind of unapologetic badassery.

Even those who hated Suicide Squad would probably admit that Viola Davis’ performance in the movie was brilliant. She just nailed it as Amanda Waller. And she seemed just as “unapologetic” as her character about working in the DC Extended Universe, which is obviously good news for us.

Had she seemed regretful, we would be worried about whether she'd ever want to return. But at the moment, it feels safe to assume that we'll see Davis as Waller again in Suicide Squad 2 or another movie. We would surely love to see her back in the DCEU.
