Is Sony's Life a Venom Prequel?

At one time, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a promising project. Sony made it clear that they intended to create a shared universe focused on the web slinger, and they announced quite a few movies. Sure, there was that Aunt May Secret Agent project that had everyone wondering what the studio was thinking. But Sinister Six and Venom were waiting in the wings as spin-offs of the core Spider-Man franchise.

Everything fell apart when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed at the box office. Nonetheless, the studio continued to say that part of the plan still remained, and we’ve just learned that Venom will indeed be made. The movie is scheduled for release on the 5th of October 2018 - even sooner than we would have expected.

However, there’s a new theory circulating online that says that we could see the symbiote on the big screen as soon as this year. And it won't be in just any movie. No, it’s Life, a movie packed with stars, including Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Rebecca Ferguson. It’s about a crew of astronauts that finds evidence of life on Mars, after which everything goes straight to hell.

The theory originated with a Reddit user who spotted a frame from Spider-Man 3 (in which Venom was one of the villains) in the Life trailer. It wouldn’t be that surprising to learn that Sony had recycled some footage. But it’s interesting to think that Life could serve as an origin story for Venom.

Last year, we had two movies that weren't connected with any previously released films. However, 10 Cloverfield Lane ended up in the same shared universe as 2008's Cloverfield (the follow-up, God Particle, will be released this year), while M. Night Shyamalan's Split was actually a villain origin story for 2000's Unbreakable (a third movie will follow soon).

Life (IMDB)

So it wouldn't be out of the ordinary.

What do you think? Could it be true that Life is really Venom’s origin story?
