Venom Begins Production Today!

If Sony hadn’t officially scratched its plans to create a SpiderVerse following The Amazing Spider-Man 2, people still probably wouldn't have expected the studio to move forward with any Marvel properties. But it's happening. Although Spider-Man is now a part of the MCU, Sony still owns the Spider-Man related characters. And Venom is one of those characters.

For better or for worse (it's the latter for some MCU fans), Venom is happening, as evidenced by a first official pic of Tom Hardy and others that showed up on the movie’s Twitter account. Venom's cast is quite impressive, with Michelle Williams (most likely as the main female protagonist), Jenny Slate, Riz Ahmed, and Scott Haze all confirmed.

Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), is directing this R-rated flick.

Sure, it isn’t a pic of a particular set, it doesn’t feature Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock (let alone as Venom), and we can’t see who the other people are. But it's the best sign we've seen that the wheels are actually turning!

Venom isn’t the only Marvel movie Sony announced. In the absence of Spider-Man - and much to the bewilderment of many - Sony is also moving forward with Silver and Black, which is based on the characters Silver Sable and Black Cat. On top of that, it was revealed some time ago that the studio wants to use the Spider-Man characters Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio in its movies.

We don’t know anything about Venom's plot, but the inevitable online rumors say that it will most likely adapt the Lethal Protector storyline (obviously, they'll skip over characters owned by Marvel Studios).

For the moment, there's no release date set for Venom.
