DiCaprio as Joker: Don’t Trust the Rumors

In a move that stunned everyone, it was recently announced that Warner Bros. had plans to launch a new DC Comics-based cinematic universe. The movies would have no connection with the DC Extended Universe, and they would feature new actors, even in roles that had been previously cast.

The announcement followed some rumors from a while back that said that Warner Bros. had a Superman: Red Son flick under consideration.

In another announcement, the studio revealed that it would develop a Joker origin movie set in the 1980's, with none other than Martin Scorsese in talks to produce. Given the nature of Scorsese's other movies – and the setting and subject for this one – we would expect that it would be rated R.

In a more recent rumor, Warner Bros. had its eye on Leonardo DiCaprio for the lead role in the Joker movie. The actor has collaborated with Scorsese on a number of projects, so it felt like a credible rumor, although it sounded too good to be true.

According to The Wrap, it was indeed too good to be true. The website reported that Scorsese was in very early talks with the studio concerning this project, and added that the chances of casting DiCaprio in the lead role were slim to none. And current DCEU Joker Jared Leto is reportedly not thrilled about the idea of someone else playing the part.

Keep in mind that all of these comments were unofficial and based on rumor. No official statement has been issued by Warner Bros., DiCaprio, Scorsese, or any of their representatives.

To be noted, Leonardo DiCaprio has already turned down offers to appear in comic book films that included Joel Schumacher's Robin (dodged a bullet there) and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man.
