Suicide Squad: Worst Movie of 2016, According to Rolling Stone

Quite a few comic book movies were released in 2016. Some of them were great and some weren't. Some of them exceeded expectations, while some of them proved to be disappointments. But all of them proved to be box office hits. So at this moment, there is no point in subjectively debating which one of them was the worst or the most disappointing.

Rolling Stone has once again made a list of the Top 10 worst movies of 2016. And just one comic book movie was on the list. It wasn't TMNT 2 and it wasn't Max Steel. It wasn't even X-Men: Apocalypse. Instead, the first ensemble movie featuring supervillains and comics from DC took the “prize” - Suicide Squad.

According to the magazine, director David Ayer took a great premise (which seemed to be tailor-made for him) and ruined it completely in order to attract bigger audiences:

Director-writer David Ayer, who should know better based on his solid work on End of Watch and Fury, went over to the light side and sold out a daring premise to a limp-dick, PG-13 crowd-pleaser.

And these are really harsh words directed at Ayer, especially since Warner Bros. decided at a certain point in the film’s making to intervene and cut Suicide Squad in a different manner.

But the magazine keeps on going, finally saying whose fault this was:

If you want to see the soul-killing trend in the film industry to cynically suck the life out of movies for a quick buck, it’s all distilled here in the 123 minutes of grinding monotony that is this superdud.

So blame it on the industry, right?

Anyway, there are quite a few other films released this year that deserved this spot - films included in the Rolling Stone list (you can check it out here). But what about The Legend of Tarzan? What about the Ben Hur remake? What about the much-anticipated Zoolander sequel?

Yes - Suicide Squad was disappointing, mostly due to our high expectations. However, to call it the worst movie of the year is a bit of a stretch. Don't you agree?
