Suicide Squad: Characters and Trailer Analysis

Jai and Margot, Boomerang and Harley

The newest trailer for Suicide Squad might not have broken records on YouTube, but it certainly turned around many of those who believed this was going to be a terrible flick. With one of the most well-known rock songs playing as a soundtrack, with a pace which surprised many, and with quite a few reveals, the trailer knocked it out of the park. And the best thing about it is that it still didn't give away too much - and, hopefully, it won't follow in the footsteps of Batman v Superman, as far as the trailers are concerned.

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad

So we get to see all the Suicide Squad members once again, we can guess which ones will bite the dust by the end of the movie, we see Jared Leto's Joker again as well as Harley's origins, we even catch a glimpse of the main baddie of the flick, and then some (Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne in a very ambiguous role, the weird fungus-like zombies, etc.)

So what did we learn from this trailer? What else can be added about the members of the Suicide Squad and the villains of the movie? Check it out if you want - but be warned: here be spoilers!

Slipknot

Slipknot

Slipknot

Along with Captain Boomerang, Slipknot might just be the most useless of all Suicide Squad members. How come? Well, his main ability is that he is good with ropes - so you do the math. The trailer does show him in action, though, in the sense that he straight up punches a FBI lady in the face, as soon as he gets out of a car. Yes, this trailer pulls no punches, we might say.

But, other than this, Slipknot is nowhere to be seen in quite a lot of the scenes from the trailer, which makes us assume that he will meet an early end. Most likely it will be because he is, as said, pretty much useless. However, there could be another reason as well.

Slipknot

Slipknot

How are the villains recruited in the Squad from the first place? Well, it isn't as if they volunteer - and we see in the trailer a couple of quite creepy surgeons awaiting for Killer Croc (we suspect). Basically, these surgeons are tasked with implanting explosive devices in the squad members, in order to keep them in check. Can this explain the absence of Slipknot from most of the shots?

It can be. He maybe wants to run away and Amanda Waller blows him away, just to make an example. Which is pretty fine by us - from what we've seen, all the other squad members are awesome. Yes, even Captain Boomerang.

Captain Boomerang

Captain Boomerang

To make it clear, we are in no way fans of Jai Courtney. When we heard that he will be in the Suicide Squad movie, we immediately thought about all the movies he has ruined. But we might have been mistaken.

As said, his skill is also a pretty useless one - he is good with boomerangs and boomerang-like projectiles. Which cannot be effective when going against a mystical being. For that matter, if you were to choose, would you choose a boomerang or a gun?

This is, probably, the reason why we don't actually see him in action with his weapon of choice. But, even if we never believed we'd say this, he looks pretty awesome in this role. From the very start, when asking the doll to release him, to the point where he is delivered via mail service, and ending with the moment in which he makes opening a can of beer look hilariously awesome, he nails the performance.

Captain Boomerang

Captain Boomerang

Clearly, he is the wild card in a hand filled with wild cards - even the way in which he is delivered shows that he is like a rabid dog, which won't take orders so easily. And this makes us wonder whether or not he'll trade punches with other Suicide Squad members - yes, with Deadshot, who appears to be the de facto leader of the team (maybe that's how Boomerang got a black eye).

Diablo

Diablo

Diablo

When Diablo was shown in the first trailer, we believed that his powers will be dumbed down to the point where he has no powers at all. And, boy, we were mistaken.

But we do have an excuse - thus far, we haven't really seen too many characters exhibiting magical/mystical abilities. And since Man of Steel (which opened the DCEU) was pretty realistic in its display of superpowers (in the sense that it tried to explain them in a scientific way), we didn't really believe that we'd see such a display so soon.

Yes, we did know that Enchantress will be the one to bring it - but only her.

Diablo

Diablo

Diablo is, for that matter, the biggest surprise of this second trailer, being completely of the charts, as far as his awesomeness is concerned. His cell is basically one big container which can be flooded whenever the guards feel like it. This character is truly a pyromancer. And we see that in a couple of shots from the trailer.

When we saw Diablo for the first time, most of the people complained about him. We can say that those people can rest assured now. And if this secondary character gets to have such revealing scenes in a single trailer, we're wondering what other surprises Ayer has in store for us. For example, Katana

Katana

Katana

Katana

This is yet another exotic character from the Suicide Squad we suspected will be dumbed down. After all, she is in the comics the possessor of the Soultaker, a special type of Katana which stores the souls of those it kills. In the comics, the sword also allows its user to communicate with these souls and even make them serve for the user.

So who would have suspected that these abilities will actually appear in the film? We only expected for Katana to be just a skilled swordswoman - but she is so much more.

The Suicide Squad trailer cannot be more explicit, from this point of view. The sword emanates what seem to be spectral skulls - without a doubt, these are the souls it has taken. Furthermore, Katana also seems to communicate with the spirits residing in her blade. One shot from the trailer shows her eyes becoming almost entirely white, to turn afterwards entirely black.

Katana

Katana

Now this is a very interesting ability - though we don't know what use it may have in the overall plot of Suicide Squad. We can bet that some fungus-like soldiers will meet their end - but will they also be subjugated?

We'll just wait and see. Thus far, though, our expectations cannot get any higher.

We can also add that Katana is not actually a villain, though she is a member of the squad. Instead, she is a volunteer (yes, an actual volunteer), acting as Rick Flag's personal bodyguard.

Killer Croc

Killer Croc

Killer Croc

When the first pics of Killer Croc leaked from the set of Suicide Squad, we didn't know what to make of them. The guy looked cartoonish, to say the least, as if he jumped from a low-budget horror movie. It wasn't so, though. Just like the previous characters, he is also tremendous.

Since we mentioned Diablo's cell, we can also mention Killer Croc's - it is perfectly suited for his needs, even if his needs are cannibalistic. Thus, he may have a bed of some sorts (without any mattress), which is used for push-ups - but it also appears that the sewer over flows, providing the villain with the perfect camouflage. Furthermore, we can also notice that Killer Croc decorated his cell according to his tastes. Literally, since the walls are adorned with bones and even entrails.

Killer Croc

Killer Croc

The way his cell looks makes us wonder if Killer Croc receives preferential treatment from Amanda Waller. Maybe she uses him to dispose of some of the inmates"¦ Who knows?

We also have a close-up with the character, close-up which, again, looks very promising. Bringing Killer Croc to life via prosthetics is a bold move, one which can have a huge pay off. The actor can convey emotion in a realistic way or, at least, more realistically than when using CGI.

Deadshot

Deadshot

Deadshot

The biggest drawback of having Will Smith portraying Deadshot is not the lack of acting chops. Will Smith has proven time and time again that he can become the characters he plays. Instead, the downside is that Deadshot won't be wearing his iconic mask all throughout the movie.

But, at least, Suicide Squad will show us his weapon of choice, the wrist mounted firearms. Of course, he also uses some other types of weapons in the Suicide Squad trailer.

Deadshot

Deadshot

From what we see, Deadshot is the one character who is the most contemplative - probably because he has everything to lose if the mission doesn't succeed. And this also puts him on a collision course with the official leader of the Suicide Squad, namely Rick Flag. From what we can guess, Deadshot doesn't really approve the tactics of Flag. And he is right, since Flag's soldiers end up enemies when the villain is revealed.

Here's what Will Smith said: “As the movie opens, [Deadshot] has a really big career score. He’s looking to turn over a new leaf with his daughter after the hit, but it goes wrong. It goes terribly, terribly wrong. And it lands him in [prison] Belle Reve for life." Of course, Will Smith also said that Deadshot is a bit attracted by Harley Quinn

Rick Flag

Rick Flag

Rick Flag

Back when the cast for Suicide Squad was revealed, the rumor was that Rick Flag will turn against the squad and become the hidden villain of the movie. We don't know just yet, but Flag does seem to be an outsider (so not necessarily an army man), amazed of the team he has to lead. After all, he does look bewildered when checking out the files of each of the squad members.

And so he is not necessarily a straight-forward villain - he is a man tasked with a job and he intends to do it. Obviously, there are hiccups along the way (a little looting during the job is always welcomed), something with which he isn't used to.

Rick Flag

Rick Flag

Most interestingly, this second Suicide Squad trailer revealed that he has an actual relationship with Enchantress/June Moon. The Comic Con trailer only teased that there might have been something between them - now we are certain that Flag is June's lover, even if she is possessed by a witch.

And this makes it a bit difficult for us to believe that Enchantress is the one the Suicide Squad is sent after, as the rumors suggested. Sure enough, she is the only character with actual magical abilities - but she is in hand's reach, being Flag's better half.

To be noted, he is in the comics a bit mentally unbalanced - but more on that later on.

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn

Talking about her character, Margot Robbie assured the fans that she'll keep it creepy, violent, crazy. And, so far, she doesn't disappoint: both of the trailers released so far seem to focus on her character, and both times we were pleasantly impressed by her performance.

As far as we are concerned, Suicide Squad won't be the last movie we see Harley Quinn. She has been a fan-favorite from the moment she appeared in the Batman: The Animated Series and we have been waiting for her for so long. DC and Warner Bros will certainly make the most of her (in the next Suicide Squad and the Batman movies, of course).

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn

This year we will also see her origin story. If the first trailer shown how the Joker begins torturing her, this second one shows the moment she completely transforms. Her transformation is taken straight out of the comics, with her being raised from some chemical pool by the Clown Prince of Crime. Of course, we can suppose that he was the one to throw her there from the first place - but who knows?

Director David Ayer also spoke about Harley, saying that Suicide Squad will be her chance to break free from the Joker, to become independent. Seeing that Deadshot fancies her, we can assume that she'll succeed in the end.

Harley is the protagonist of the best scenes in the trailer. And she is the one to have the last laugh, after breaking the glass of a designer store (si vis pacem para bellum, or if you want peace, prepare for war).

Joker

Joker

Joker

There can't be enough of this Joker in the trailers. Yeah, he has grills and that tattoo on his forehead is more than weird. But Jared Leto can certainly steal all the attention.

He has toys, just like Jack Nicholson's version, but we can bet that they aren't so funny. The one to play with these toys is the exact same guy who kicked Deadshot in the opening of the trailer, one of Amanda Waller's enforcers. Is there some grudge between the Joker and this guy? Is the Joker trying to punish the guy who mistreated his Puddin? If so, wait "˜till he hears about the other guy who fancies her"¦

Joker

Joker

The Joker has quite a few outfits in this second Suicide Squad trailer - 5 or 6 of them. And one of them is an iconic one. We can understand if you missed it, since his horrible face may have distracted you. But he wears the same formal outfit (completed with a white flower on the chest) as if he was painted by Alex Ross himself.

After this second trailer, we are even more convinced that the Joker isn't the one the Suicide Squad is after. More and more we believe that he is the side dish and not the main course. And we do believe that we will see him mainly in the flashbacks concerning Harley and only in a few scenes in the present (such as the one mentioned above, when he lets Alpha 01 play with his toys.

Enchantress

Enchantress

Enchantress

Enchantress is not in the Suicide Squad, since we don't see her in any of the scenes involving the team members. Furthermore, she cannot be the main baddie, simply because she is in a relationship with Rick Flag and she is present at some sort of meeting at the White House.

Or maybe she is one of the main baddies, twisting Rick Flag's mind even more. After all, her tone is a bit ominous when saying, let's do something fun. We can also say that those fungus-like creatures with whom the Suicide Squad fights resemble the dark matter emanated by the Enchantress.

Enchantress

Enchantress

In the comics, June Moon and the Enchantress are two separated entities, with the latter being summoned whenever her name is called. But the thing is that Enchantress doesn't want to leave too soon - and things go out of control. Maybe this is the case with Suicide Squad as well"¦ though we still have our doubts.

The secret villain

The villain....

The villain….

One of the most spread theories is that the villain the Squad is sent after is Incubus, the brother of Enchantress (well, a relative of the demonic entity possessing June Moon). Apparently, Enchantress reveals her plans later on in the film, when Incubus has already arrived on Earth. But this theory is too thin.

Another one says that the Tattooed Man (played by Common) is the main baddie. In the comics, he is a villain who can manipulate the living tattoos on his body. The thing in the subway does seem to have tribal tattoos on his body. And we don't really know what effect these living tattoos have on people. By all means, we also believe this, though we don't know if there is some hidden relation between the Tattooed Man, Enchantress, and Rick Flag.

What happened there?!?

What happened there?!?

Lastly, there is one more theory, which is even weirder, saying that the creature in the subway is M’nagalah, the Cancer God, who can infect and enslave those with whom he comes into contact. Physically, this infection manifests itself through boils and all sorts of lesions, which appear on the skin of the victims. Could this be the reason why those soldiers fight the Suicide Squad?

Other Suicide Squad characters

Scott Eastwood

Scott Eastwood

There are quite a few other Suicide Squad characters about whom we can talk about. But the most interesting one is definitely Scott Eastwood. Officially, the actor portrays GQ - so, basically, he is a nobody. However, we find it hard to believe that, with all the rumors out there.

Sure enough, we see him as one of Rick Flag's companions, as being just a simple soldier. But many suspect that he is either a hero, either a villain waiting to make his move. Many believe that he is Deathstroke, though it doesn't make any sense having him here. On the other hand, many hope that he is a former Robin in disguise, sent by the Batman to infiltrate the Suicide Squad and find out more about Amanda Waller's plans.
