Spider-Man’s Future in the MCU Not Set in Stone

A new trailer was released a couple of days ago, and fans can’t wait to see more of Spider-Man on the big screen and in the company of the other MCU superheroes. He’s set to appear in next year’s Infinity War, so that wish will become true. However, how long will Disney and Marvel have the rights to this character?

We’re certain that there will indeed be an MCU sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. The most recent rumors, which are based on remarks made by Amy Pascal (Sony) at CinemaCon, say that the sequel will be the web-crawler's last outing with the other Marvel superheroes:.

One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don't have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often. In fact, it may never happen again - after we do the sequel. Because Sony and Disney and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU, and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film. And I think that was a very rare thing for three companies to do, and a very brilliant thing for them to decide to do, because there are only so many stories that you know you can tell again and again and again about Spidey, and this is something that we would never been able to do in any other way. So, it was a very selfless thing that was very smart on the part of all the companies. (via Screen Rant)

At first, anybody might believe that lending Spider-Man to Disney and Marvel was an altruistic gesture toward the fans. However, we all know that it’s about money. Sony was disappointed with the box office performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, so the web-slinger was allowed to appear in the MCU.

But this is good news. While Amy Pascal may have said that such a collaboration might not happen again, money will be the one factor in a decision to have Spider-Man leave the shared universe.

So the character’s fans shouldn't be pessimistic. If Spider-Man manages to attract enough moviegoers with Homecoming and its sequel, more movies in the same shared universe will follow.
