New Mutants Adds Cast Members

X-Men: The New Mutants, one of  three X-Men movies scheduled for release next year, is scheduled to begin production in July. The plot has been kept under wraps, but rumors say that New Mutants will adapt the Demon Bear saga. We do know that Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) have been cast as Magik and Wolfsbane, respectively. In addition, Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple in the MCU’s Netflix corner) is in talks to portray Cecilia Reyes.

Most recently, we’ve learned that a couple of additional actors have joined the cast roster.

Charlie Heaton (Dread Central)

Yesterday we learned that Millie Bobby Brown auditioned to play Logan’s X-23 without success. Today it was announced that her Stranger Things co-star Charlie Heaton (who brings Jonathan Byers to life in the acclaimed Netflix series) has been cast as Cannonball in X-Men: The New Mutants.

Cannonball (Comic Vine)

In the comics, Cannonball is one of the founding members of the New Mutants. As his name suggests, he’s able to fly at sonic speeds by directing thermochemical energy through his skin. As an after-effect of this, he can create an impenetrable force-field that encases him and protects him from any harm.

We also learned today that another key New Mutants role has been filled. Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) has been cast as Sunspot. Previously, Sunspot was played by Adan Canto in X-Men: Days of Future Past, although that version of the character wasn't exactly true to the version seen in comic books.

X-Men: The New Mutants will be directed by Josh Boone and is scheduled for an April 13, 2018 release.
