John Landis Speaks Highly of Wonder Woman, then Slams Marvel Movies!

John Landis speaks highly of Wonder Woman but slams Marvel movies!

It's been some time since director John Landis (The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, and Coming to America) took charge of a movie; his most recent was 2010’s Burke and Hare. But in a recent interview, the director claimed that he was "not retired" and that he kept up with the latest Hollywood releases.

Landis told Irish website Entertainment that he recently watched Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman and liked it. The director went on to sing the praises of lead actress Gal Gadot:

I saw Wonder Woman last night, actually! Have you seen it? I thought it was good, I really liked her (Gal Gadot) – she was wonderful, really charming, and beautiful. She really sold it. I was very impressed with the girl – the woman!

It's difficult to find anyone who hasn't enjoyed watching the Amazon Warrior Princess’ movie. Its Rotten Tomatoes approval rating is currently at 93 percent, and it’s performing exceedingly well at the box office. So it’s no surprise that Landis spoke highly of Wonder Woman.

During the same interview, the director made the shocking revelation that he is no longer a fan of certain Marvel Studios superhero movies that have been loved by critics and audiences alike. Landis explained his reasons for his apathy toward the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

I’m just…truthfully, I’m bored shitless with the Marvel Universe now. All the superhero movies tend to be interchangeable, you always have mass destruction of cities, and huge computer-generated extravaganzas, to the point where you could take a reel from any of the Marvel superhero movies and put it any of the others, and nobody would notice. They’re very well-made; it’s just that they’re the same thing over and over again. But, I don’t know, people are showing up. One of the reasons Wonder Woman has been received so well by the critics is that it doesn’t destroy cities (laughs)! Even the superhero stuff is on a very human scale; it’s the gods! We’re not seeing skyscrapers tumbling (laughs)!
