Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Ego's Powers Revealed

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 is one of the most anticipated comic book movies this year. This is due in part to Star-Lord’s reunion with his father, a character Peter Quill's mother (on her deathbed) and Yondu hinted at during the first installment. Everyone assumed that they were talking about J'son, Emperor of the Spartoi Empire, as seen in the comics.

However, James Gunn had different plans, and revealed that Star Lord's father is in fact Ego the Living Planet - an actual talking planet. Naturally, people began to wonder how Peter Quill was conceived by a planet and a human female.

Director James Gunn just answered that question, stating that it’s related to Ego the Living Planet’s ability to control molecules in order to create avatars. Luckily, Kurt Russell portrays one of the avatars:

Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways. He's been alone for millions of years, and he's learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell. (via CBR)

James Gunn went on to say that Ego the Living Planet must have felt alone throughout his millions (or billions) years of existence. This prompted him to go in search of a significant other:

I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself, and went off in search of love, and perhaps found it in Quill's mother.

This is just a partial answer to our question, since we still don't know how an planet’s avatar could conceive a baby with a human female. Maybe this caused her death? We can bet we’ll have a complete answer on May 5, when Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 is released.
