Batgirl Is Getting a Theatrical Release – In the United Kingdom

It would appear that the next DC Extended Universe feature Batgirl is heading for a theatrical release; however, this will not be happening in the United States.

Batgirl is expected to arrive in theaters across the United Kingdom sometime in 2023, according to a recently updated release calendar that was disseminated by Warner Bros. UK; however, a particular release date has not yet been announced. It is still anticipated that HBO Max would be the only platform on which the movie will be made available in the United States. It has long been planned that Batgirl will debut on HBO Max in the United States at some point in 2022. It is not known at this time whether the film’s release in the United Kingdom in 2023 is an indication of a delay for the release in the United States.

Batgirl is a film starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. The film was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Ms. Marvel), while the screenplay was written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey). J.K. Simmons, who previously portrayed Barbara’s father, Commissioner James Gordon, in Justice League (2017) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, also appears in this film, which takes place within the DC Extended Universe and starring other notable actors (2021). In addition, Michael Keaton, who previously played Bruce Wayne/Batman in the films Batman (1989) and Batman Returns, reprises his role in this film (1992). It is anticipated that Keaton will also play his interpretation of the Dark Knight in the upcoming DCEU film The Flash.

Batgirl also features Jacob Scipio as Anthony Bressi and Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh in addition to starring roles for Lucy Grace, Alexa Simmons, and Keaton. Unknown roles have been assigned to Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson, and Ethan Kai in the production. The film’s primary villain, Firefly, is played by Brendan Fraser, best known for his role in The Mummy. This is the second significant DC role that Fraser has played, since the actor also plays the role of Cliff Steele/Robotman on the original series Doom Patrol that airs on HBO Max.

It was announced in May 2021 that the long-awaited Batgirl movie being produced by Warner Bros. and DC Comics will not be released in theaters but rather go directly to HBO Max. This was the original concept for another film in the DC Extended Universe known as Blue Beetle, which starred Xolo Mariduena in the role of Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle. Despite this, Blue Beetle will now be making its debut in theaters on August 18th, 2023 according to its new release schedule. In April of 2022, it was rumored that Warner Bros. was contemplating bringing Batgirl to theaters in addition to its digital distribution. At the time of this writing, however, it is anticipated that Batgirl will head straight to HBO Max in the United States, despite the fact that a theatrical release appears to be a distinct possibility for audiences in the United Kingdom.
