The New Mutants Almost Featured a Colossus Cameo

The New Mutants nearly had a major X-Men cameo. This, according to director Josh Boone, who was recently interviewed by the folks at Comicbook.com. Per the filmmaker, there was a draft of the script that included Colossus, a big part of the Deadpool movies. More importantly, Colossus is the brother of Ilyana Rasputin, aka Magik, who appears in the upcoming film.

“I had early drafts. I had early drafts that had, we always loved, Knate and I loved the scene and Superman. There’s Superman three, the one where he loses his powers and goes back to Smallville. Is that one where he saves the kid from the thing going through the grass? We definitely wrote one where Ilyana was in like a field in Russia that was being tilled,” Boone said. “And suddenly her brother comes in and you see all the armor come on him and stop the thing from running her over or whatever. We had stuff like that in earlier drafts that just got further and further away from a budget standpoint and everything else. Which is suddenly Ilyana rescued, and is Colossus‘ sister.”

While an X-Men connection would make sense, there is perhaps a benefit in not having those connections in the movie. There is a possibility that Marvel Studios and Disney could opt to retcon The New Mutants as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Slim as those chances may be, having connections to the older Fox universe would make that next to impossible.

Here is the synopsis for The New Mutants.

“Twentieth Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents ‘The New Mutants,’ an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.”

The Marvel adaptation was directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in our Stars) and written by Boone and Knate Lee. It stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones); Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass); Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things); Alice Braga (Predators); Blu Hunt (The Originals); and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why). The film is produced by Simon Kinberg, Karen Rosenfelt and Lauren Shuler Donner with Stan Lee and Michele Imperato Stabile serving as executive producers.

Originally, the movie was set to arrive in 2018 but clashes with the studio, the theater closure brought on by the coronavirus this year and other issues have pushed back its release several times.

The New Mutants finally hits theaters on August 28.
