Milly Alcock Cast As Supergirl In The New DC Universe

Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new Supergirl. After a thorough search that came down to several candidates, it has been revealed that Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) has been cast as the DC Comics superhero for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The movie is currently in the works at Warner Bros. as part of the new DC Universe. The news was first reported by Deadline

Alcock beat out Emilia Jones (CODA) and Meg Donnelly (Zombies) to win the role. Interestingly, Donnelly has already voiced the character in several DC animated movies such as 2023’s Legion of Super-Heroes. While Alcock will star in a solo movie, it’s believed she will appear in a DCU project before then. James Gunn is directing Superman: Legacy, which is set to arrive next year. An appearance in that film is not out of the question. Gunn took to Instagram to confirm the casting and released a brief statement, singing the praises of the actress.

“This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely and Ana Nogueira.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was announced as part of the new DCU slate last year. Gunn is now the co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. Gunn previously helmed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel, as well as 2021’s The Suicide Squad. The full slate also includes other movies such as The Authority, Swamp Thing and The Brave and the Bold. Several shows including Booster Gold and Waller are also on deck. The Supergirl movie will be based on the 2021 comic book series of the same name.

Here is the synopsis for the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book.

“Kara Zor-El can no longer find any meaning or purpose in her life. But all that changes when an alien girl seeks her out to help her take revenge on the bad guys who destroyed her world. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core. It’s Supergirl like you’ve never seen her before in a character-defining sci-fi/fantasy masterpiece!”

Ana Nogueira is set to pen the screenplay for the film. No director has been attached yet. Noguerira was originally writing a version of the film that would have been a spin-off of The Flash. That movie saw Sasha Calle take on the role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El. It’s unclear if Gunn and Safran ever planned to potentially bring back Calle. In the end, Warner Bros. went with Alcock.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow does not currently have a release date.
