A Closer Look To Superman 's New Comic Book Guise

Superman's new costume

Superman's new comic book costume was presented to the world on February 4th. Geoff Johns wrote and John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson drew issue Superman #38. So, it is to them that we owe the new looks of DC's prime superhero.

New looks? Some might disagree. Now, Jim Lee's version of Superman costume was, indeed, a breakthrough. In 2011, New 52 did away with the classical red trunks of Superman. The outfit kept its iconic reds and blues, but it turned into an armor-like getup. Its heavy-duty look made some speculate this was no unplanned happening: they said this is how they ushered in the Man of Steel.

What's new about Superman 's costume in #38?

No, no trunks for Superman here either. Look at the big picture:

But there are some minor noteworthy changes. See the round yellow detail of the belt? Then, there are also the built-in fingerless gloves. The capital S is also a bit slenderer if you compare with previous versions of the chest detail.

And, yes, the boots: see V shaped slit of the shaft? Check the differences below:

But, overall, is this a new look? Does a "new look" make sense at all when it comes to superhero costumes? Isn't the costume part of the hero's identity and, hence, a distinguishable feature that must remain the same in order for us to be able to recognize them as such?

Clearly, that's a never-ending discussion which brings us back to where we started. That is, back to details. On top of the said differences, some tend to appreciate the return of the textile-ish quality of Superman's guise. Which undeniably tickles the fancy of the nostalgic that have learned to appreciate the garb virtues of spandex.

So, do you think John Romita Jr.'s version of Superman's costume is a real advancement? Have your say below!
