The X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover has been a subject of debate for a while now. All things fall in place for a tie-in of such proportions, mostly after the generally well received first trailer of Fantastic Four. Plus, consider Simon Kinberg: he's the current producer helming the X-Men franchise and producer of Fantastic Four.

The fact Fox has the rights on both slates adds up. Could the X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover happen in the near future? In the same interview with Entertainment Weekly where he talked about Moira returning to X-Men, Simon Kinberg also elaborated on Doctor Doom and revealed his take on the said X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover.

The X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover, a possibility

The tie-in bandwagon: is this one Simon Kinberg is willing to jump in? See his elaborate insight here. But he does build up to the answer:

"Part of what's cool about the Fantastic Four comics is that there's an emphasis on the science of science fiction. And we treat what would normally be considered a superpower as a trauma. They don't just go up a roof, jump off, and start swinging through the city. It's the opposite. What would happen if your body transformed, and you didn't have control over it?"

That does sound a lot like X-Men, which is initially about mutants who strive to learn how to control their powers.

"The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself," says Kinberg, which is, understandably, a prerequisite for the X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover. "We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could," adds Kinberg. "There's a lot of precedent from the comics."

A thought on Doctor Doom

On a final note, Kinberg says about Doctor Doom "he has aspirations and struggles that are a little bit more classically tragic than the other characters. As much as it's an origin story of our heroes, it also tracks how someone can become a villain."

What do you make of that, in particular if you consider Doctor Doom hardly shows up in the released trailer? All in all, it's comforting to know the X-Men / Fantastic Four crossover is not something they've forgot about, though it's not exactly their top priority right now.
