The latter doesn't seem too probable, since the first Avengers roster has already changed, with the addition of new superheroes, with more following during the Phase III (Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man). So, with Thor being almost immortal (we know how this sounds, but bear with us), what will happen with him?

Killed

As said, he isn't exactly a god, nor a demigod (as we are used to believing). His father, Odin, said that repeatedly. And while they do live more, much more than a human being, they can still get old and they can still die.

And this usually happens in battle - as it happened with Odin's father, as it happened to Odin himself (as we want to believe). So what if Thor actually dies in the end, thus putting an end to what is, until now, the weakest solo franchise in the MCU?

Ragnarok will come and will, most likely, see the destruction of Asgard. An angered Thor might just do something stupid during the Infinity War and get himself killed. But this isn't a too satisfying solution for this character, even if a big death will be more than welcomed in the MCU at that moment.

In the comics, the Ragnarok is a universal event in which all the 9 realms are almost completely destroyed. After fierce battling, almost all (if not all) the gods are killed - but this isn't the end, since they will be reborn.

However, Thor has the power to stop this circle of life and death and, basically, stop the apocalypse. At which point he enters hibernation - pretty much like we have already seen Odin do. Rest assured, he will wake just in time in order to confront Thanos, who will easily defeat him. Just like in the comics. Whether killed or not, this will mean the end of the Mighty Thor.

Beyond the Infinity War

Chris Hemsworth's contract will end with the Infinity War. But like we have seen with Robert Downey Jr., contracts can be extended.

But what if it won't happen this way with Hemsworth? It will be no biggie, since someone else could easily replace him as Thor. As known, his power is derived from the Mjolnir, who cannot be controlled by the unworthy. This opens the possibility for another character to become the God of Thunder - and we have already seen someone budging the hammer (Captain America) and someone actually lifting it (Vision - but, as Captain America and Iron Man said, he is like an elevator).

So what if someone else becomes Thor? This has happened in the comics - with Jane Foster being the most recent character who took on the persona of the Goddess of Thunder.

Of course, for the non-comic book reader, this is far-fetched. As far-fetched as seeing the Winter Soldier becoming the new Captain America. But this is a possibility, one that might bring another superheroine into the fold.

Natalie Portman may portray that superheroine - or maybe another actress.

Thor - the Iron Man style

Robert Downey Jr. has already completed his Iron Man trilogy - and there are no plans for a 4^th installment of his franchise. But still he is as present as ever in the MCU. Basically, he can be considered a secondary character (from now on), being the antagonist (or something like that) during the Civil War and possibly appearing in the first Spider-Man flick.

So what if Thor (and Chris Hemsworth) goes in the same direction? Ragnarok will be the end of his solo franchise, but he will still continue existing. He may as well become the new king of Asgard - Odin has been killed and Loki will certainly not keep the throne for too long.

So Thor may as well become the King and he won't have the time to intervene in all the petty wars the humans will fight. Sure, he may give some advices or he may even send some fighters or lightings or something, but he will still be there, watching over the 9 realms.

Thor - the old man with the new weapon

As said, Chris Hemsworth might continue being Thor well after the Infinity War movies. And, another alternative besides him becoming the King of Asgard, is going into seclusion. He will be, thus, a raggedy old man who has lost the power of wielding Mjolnir - good riddance, we say, because it was too hard to pronounce. Instead, his weapon becomes the battle-axe Jarnbjorn.

Thus, Thor might as well make just cameo appearances, just like Nick Fury has been doing for quite some time now. And we are ok with that.

After all, there needs to be a connection between the new roster of Avengers and the older one.

He can - but he shouldn't

Leaving aside the fact that his franchise has been, thus far, the weakest in the entire MCU, Thor shouldn't continue being an Avenger after the Infinity Wars have ended.

The appeal of the MCU lies in this question: what happens next? For example, with Captain America, we saw him clashing with HYDRA, with the final confrontation being, most likely, during the Civil War. Iron Man has tricked us until now, leading us to believe that the Mandarin will be the final enemy of Tony Stark.

With Thor, Loki has always been a central character, who has never crossed the line into becoming a hero. So Ragnarok or the Infinity War might just bring the end of this clash.

But the charm of the MCU is always bringing something new to the table. The Infinity War will come and go, thus ending what could be called the Golden Age of the MCU. Even if Thor could remain in the Avengers roster, he shouldn't.

Whether killed, whether King, whether going into seclusion, he should step aside and make way for other superheroes - and, thank goodness, there are still many of them in the comics.
