Who would have thought that, after just a single trailer, Suicide Squad will become one of the most awaited superhero movies of 2016? And who would have thought that the new Joker will be one of the reasons why this has happened?

Say what you want to say about Jared Leto's portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime - one thing you cannot say is that you are not interested in what he'll bring to the table.

Before moving on, check out this gif, from Man of Steel - a small detail, but a detail which shows us that the current DC movies are much bloodier than anybody would have expected.

 

Sure enough, Suicide Squad will be PG-13 (though, there are some rumors saying that it will be R-rated, much like all the other David Ayer movies).

Suicide Squad - a first origin story

Just like everybody knows, Suicide Squad will focus on the villains of the DC comics, mainly on those from the Batman rogue gallery. But it will also serve as an origin story for some of the characters.

Most notably, we will get to see how Dr. Harleen F. Quinzel becomes Harley Quinn after encountering the Joker. There are some other backstories as well, teased in the Suicide Squad trailer, but they are of no importance at the moment.

In the trailer, we see Joker and his goons launching an assault on the Arkham Asylum. And we see him threatening the good doctor à la Jacki Nicholson in Shining - he is prepared to torment her and twist her mind - he isn't going to kill her, he's just going to hurt her really, really bad.

So this is just one of the origin stories. Which one is the other, very closely related to the one of Harley Queen?

Joker - he isn't a former Robin!

Just like with many other major movies, very many fan theories have also appeared for Suicide Squad. And, by far, the most interesting and talked about one concerns the identity of the Joker. In this way, it was believed that he is a twisted Robin, after being beaten to a pulp and tormented by the original Joker.

Just like in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, it was believed that the original villain kidnapped Robin and tormented him, just like he is doing with Harleen in the Suicide Squad trailer. It was believed that Batman came to rescue his sidekick and Joker ended up shot by the tormented kid.

Fast forward and the former Robin became a new Joker - and this theory sounds, even at this moment, extremely plausible. Given the fact that a Robin (Dick Grayson) is dead in this DC continuity, there was no reason to believe otherwise about Joker's hidden identity: Twenty years in Gotham… how many good guys are left? How many stay that way?

An origin for Red Hood!

That is right - the Suicide Squad trailer has a potential origin story for Red Hood too! How come you didn't see it?

There are countless of articles on the web dissecting the Suicide Squad trailer and none of them makes this reference. Just like the gif with which I opened this article, it is a blink and you'll miss it scene - it is even less than that. You could have watched the trailer countless of times and you wouldn't have seen it - what happens in the foreground is much more interesting than what happens in the background.

And, furthermore, you cannot even see it all that clearly!

It is the same trailer scene in which the presumed Johnny Frost is slamming Harleen down onto the table, during the assault on Arkham. It is Harley's origin story, right? Well, there are some other interesting things happening in the background too, which would explain (and even more) the fate of Robin!

Joker and the crowbar

This subtitle alone is a hint of what is happening in the background - as Johnny Frost takes care of the good doctor, we see one of Joker's goons being shot in the background. This is not interesting at all (though we do see the blood splattering and further hope for an R-rating). The shot goon is with his back to another, well, background scene. A hidden scene, since there are small explosions and lots of sparkles hiding what is happening in the other room.

Now, we all know that this entire assault on Arkham is a flashback - so we do have a timeframe: sometime when there were still good men in Gotham.

So what is happening in the other room? Well, it is Joker swinging a pipe/crowbar and beating to a pulp someone, who is still hidden (and, as it seems, in a bag). In the comics, who met this horrible fate at the hands of the Joker?

Well, of course, it was a Robin! Killed by the Crown Prince of Crime, he would come back to life via the Lazarus Pit as the new Red Hood!

I'm just gonna hurt you really, really bad! This was what the Joker said in the Suicide Squad trailer to Doctor Harleen, right before making the craziness come out of her.

Why did he say that? Because she knew that he has just killed Robin!

So what do you think? Interesting? Well, it is more than interesting to me - in this way, we might as well say that we know who will be the main antagonist of the first solo Batfleck movie!
