Star Trek Beyond – Release Date Moved

Fans of Star Trek are about to face the latest news about the Star Trek Beyond release date. The good part is that the date is still somewhere next year, just not on July 8, 2016.

So, the release date was moved to July 22nd, 2016. Not a very big delay but it's good to be informed in case you count the days until Star Trek Beyond hits the cinemas. The news come from Paramount Pictures.

There are sources that blame the delay on the changes Warner Bros. made for the release of Tarzan on July 1,2016. Other sources dug deeper and saw the whole thing from a different angle.

Warner Bros. secures every IMAX theatre for the release of Tarzan movie on July 1, 2016

The reason beyond the delay, as Deadline reports, may be related to the fact that all IMAX theatres are secured for the release of Tarzan movie on July 1, 2016. This way, if Paramount Pictures hadn't moved the date, Star Trek Beyond could not have an IMAX release.

The impact of IMAX to box office was proven before, when Paramount moved Mission: Impossible Rogue for the same reason. The blockbuster hit $614 million worldwide since its release. It will be interesting to check the box office for Star Trek Beyond and see if that's the reason.

The positive aspect beyond this delay is that those who wait for the movie's release will see it in IMAX format. There is no information if Paramount Pictures will secure the IMAX theatres as Warner Bros. did for Tarzan.

The sci-fi sequel will open against Ice Age: Collision Course and Warner Bros.’ Knights of the Round Table. Of course, other changes can happen, and we can expect delays from Warner Bros., especially if Paramount will secure every IMAX theatre as well.

Other sources think the delay was caused by another delay in the shooting schedule. Nationalledger came to this conclusion, as the release of Star Trek Beyond is being moved just a month after Simon Pegg talked about how he was rushed into penning the script:

”It’s been a very truncated process because the timeframe was a lot shorter than we’d normally have. It’s really forced us into action; you make use of the time you have.”

The first reason seems more eligible, or maybe they are both true. Either way, it seems that Paramount had no other option and the delay is not that big. After all, it will be worth waiting and seeing the sci-fi sequel in IMAX format.

Star Trek 50 years Anniversary

Next year Star Trek will celebrate 50 years since its debut on US television in 1966, and Star Trek Beyond must do the honors. The sequel will be directed by Justin Linn who has taken over after J.J. Abrams, who directed the 2009 and 2013 reboots.

It seems that Abrams declined the position because of his directorial duties for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015). Anyway, he will continue being the producer of the sci-fi sequel that aims to be more original but still in the classic Star Trek world, as Orci stated.(IMDb)

The main cast will consist of Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Karl Urban. The villain will be portrayed by Idris Elba, known for the HBO series The Wire where he portrays Russell “Stringer” Bell, a drug lord and aspiring businessman.

Idris Elba is also known for his role in Luther, a mini-series that has brought him a Golden Globe. He was also a part of Avengers: Age of Ultron cast and he will be the voice of Shere Khan in the upcoming Disney’s adaptation of The Jungle Book.

There is not much information about the plot, we just know that the script is written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. Few details skipped: the Enterprise crew will go on with their five years journey discovering strange new worlds and seeking new civilizations.

The movie is being filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, and it is the first Star Trek movie to be filmed in another location than Hollywood.
