The merger of standalone Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Fantastic Four and of The Silver Surfer tickles the fancy of every comic book movie fan. When asked about such a possibility on the occasion of the 75th celebration of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee delivered an intriguingly detailed answer.
Stan Lee has been in the business of comic book movies since time immemorial. He knows his way around a superhero, so to speak. So, there is no point in doubting his words. All the more his reply is one to which anyone can easily relate. In brief, it's all about the money and about each studio's availability to risk. As well as about Sony's, Fox's and Universal's pride to own the iconic characters.
Stan Lee carries a torch for the crossover
The question was very simple, nothing to be misconstrued: "will the Marvel Universe ever be brought back together? ["¦] Is there ever a plan to kind of bring them all back to Marvel? Back home?", Stan Lee was asked.
His ever so detailed answer came swiftly: "It's something that Marvel is very concerned about. It's very difficult to bring'em all together because these characters are so successful and make so much money that the studios that have the rights don't want to let them go. So that's something that all the lawyers and all the production companies have to work out. Whether they get it worked out, I don't know".
Stan Lee's reply is not a guarantee. In no case a confirmation measures are taken, that Marvel is actually about to approach the said studios and to negotiate. But, clearly, the crossover is contemplated by Marvel even if the project requires titanic efforts to regain the rights over the likes of Spider-Man and Fantastic Four.
His final words: "it is a shame that Marvel can’t distribute every one of them". They reflect Stan Lee's reverie and regret nothing consequential is yet put in place in order to make it happen.
