Spider-Man: Far From Home Will Be the End of An Era for the MCU

The end of an era is officially coming our way in Spider-Man: Far From Home. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the latest Spider-Man solo adventure will officially conclude what has been billed as The Infinity Saga, capping off the events we witnessed in Avengers: Endgame earlier this year. This, according to a newly surfaced interview with an international press outlet, as reported by  ComicBook.com

Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen Avengers: Endgame. Read on at your own risk.

“We’ve been working for many years on Infinity War and Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home," Feige said. "Those were the films that were culminating the entire Infinity Saga of the MCU. And as we were working on Endgame we realized that the true end of the entire Infinity Saga, the final film of Phase 3, had to be Spider-Man: Far From Home, because we lose Tony Stark at the end of Endgame.”

Indeed, Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark gave his life to save the universe and defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Tom Holland's Peter Parker was his protege and, as we've seen in the trailers for Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's clear the young hero is going to be dealing with that loss in a big way.

“The relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark is so special over the five films that Tom Holland has portrayed Spider-Man in the MCU, that we needed to see where his journey went, and see how does Spider-Man step out of the shadow of his mentor, Tony Stark, and become the true hero that he was always meant to be.", Feige continued. "And it’s for that reason that Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home are essentially two pieces of the same story, and it’s not over yet until Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

So this movie, in essence, will be providing closure to the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe up to this point. Eleven years worth of interconnected storytelling. No pressure. Here's the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

"Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever."

Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming) directs, working from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The cast includes Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, JB Smoove, Jacob Batalon, Martin Starr and Marisa Tomei, with Jake Gyllenhaal set to portray the fan-favorite villain Mysterio. Though, he's been painted as an ally in the marketing so far. But are we really going to believe that about a character who is known to be a master of illusion in the pages of Marvel Comics?

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 2.
