Co-producer explains why Uncle Ben and The Daily Bugle won't be included in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man fans need no introduction to Uncle Ben or The Daily Bugle. The character and the tabloid newspaper are both integral components of the web slinger's mythos, but neither will be seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming. If you’re puzzled by this, we have the answers for you.

When the Jon Watts flick was filming in Atlanta, a group of reporters were given the opportunity to visit the set. At that time, co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll confirmed to a correspondent from Cinema Blend that Benjamin Parker’s death wouldn’t be a part of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Carroll went on to say that the studio felt that the character's death would have derailed the movie's fun, light tone:

And again, what we’re trying to tell is this sort of fun story of the kid who is doing all the wrong things for the right reasons. And once you do that, it stops becoming a fun movie about a kid trying to be a kid. He’s mourning the loss of a parent.

The producer did make it clear that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) definitely had an Uncle Ben. We’ll see May Parker, aka Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), and Peter discussing her late husband in the July 7, 2017 release:

It’s not…it’s not a huge thing that I want to go into too much, but there is an acknowledgment that there was a Ben…He’s not around anymore, for sure. They talk about that. We don’t go into any specifics…We’re implying he’s dead. We have not at all, again, gone into trying to change his origin story.

Also during the set visit, Carroll told Slash Film why The Daily Planet wouldn't be featured in the movie:

We toyed with it for a while, but again, we didn't want to go down that road right away, and if we do do a Daily Bugle, we want to do it in a way that feels contemporary. Working at a newspaper while fighting crime and overachieving, it just felt like one of those things where like"¦maybe it's in his future?

The co-producer concluded by saying that we might see Holland's version of the character working at the newspaper during his college years.
