Runaways Series Coming to the Small Screen

Runaways

Back in 2008, when the MCU was at its beginning, Kevin Feige was considering and actually ordered a script for a Runaways big screen event. However, in 2010, the project was cancelled, with the studio focusing on bringing the Avengers to life. Shortly after the release of the Avengers, Runaways was shelved. However, Feige did say that the comic book series would be adapted at some point down the line.

And that time has arrived! Yesterday, Deadline broke the news that Hulu (in association with Marvel Television and ABC Signature) has ordered a pilot for a Runaways series. Furthermore, Hulu has also ordered additional scripts for the series, with the intention of seeing how the story would unfold on the small screen.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, creators of Gossip Girl, were hired to pen these scripts and will also serve as showrunners. The deal comes as a result of intense negotiations over the last year, with Schwartz himself saying (via Deadline) that he has been a long-time fan of the comic book: "I'm a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn't be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian's characters to life.”

Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, also said via Deadline that these two are perfect for the series, the subject of coming of age being well-known to them:

We've known the Runaways’ story would make great television and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie "” who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience "” write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.

Of course, at this moment, there is no scheduled release date announced. However, this is great news! And, hopefully, Hulu will be able to provide the same kind of Marvel entertainment Netflix does - especially since this series will put a spin on old comic book tropes.
