PSA: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is On Netflix Right Now

This is not a drill: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is officially available to stream on Netflix. Easily one of the best comic book movies of 2018, animated or otherwise, is now available to watch from the comfort of your own home, as long as you have an active Netflix account. The announcement was made via a rather clever tweet from the official NX Twitter account, which is Netflix’s account for sci-fi/fantasy based content.

The film, in a rare move, was co-directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman. It's not uncommon to have two credited directors, but three rarely happens. In any event, it worked out quite well, as the movie went on to become a huge hit and, for many, is arguably the greatest Spider-Man movie ever made, animated or otherwise. Rotham took to Twitter to commemorate the occasion with a pointed joked about Netflix's BoJack Horseman

For quite some time, Marvel fans had been calling to see the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man make his way to the big screen. Sony finally gave fans their wish, and then some. Peter Parker was also along for the ride, alongside Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham and more. The ambitious, multi-verse spanning adventure paid off in a big way and audiences absolutely adored Miles as much as comic book readers already had been for years.

To say that it was a success would be something of an understatement. The movie was embraced by critics and moviegoers on a near-universal level. It currently holds a 97 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That translated to big success at the box office, as the animated feature brought in $375 million worldwide. What's more, it even managed to beat out Disney and Pixar to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the Academy Awards.

Here's the official synopsis for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

"Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that's the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask."

Given the movie’s success, Sony is already planning a Spider-Verse sequel, as well as a possible female-driven spin-off centered on Spider-Gwen.
Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender) has been tapped to direct the sequel, with David Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984) set to pen the screenplay. Last we heard, Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One) was in negotiations to helm the spin-off. Bek Smith (Captain Marvel) is working on the script.

The voice cast includes Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, Nicolas Cage, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez and Lily Tomlin.
