Patty Jenkins on Criticism of Wonder Woman Outfit + First Look at Ares!

When Gal Gadot was announced as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s Wonder Woman, fans of the comic book character quickly addressed the difference between Diana Prince's appearance in the comic books and Gadot's slim figure. Of course, with the passage of time, people have realized that Gadot's Wonder Woman was the highlight of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Also, initial critical reaction indicated that she’s actually the perfect actress for this role.

In an interview with CBS, director Patty Jenkins (who also received praise for her work on the movie) responded to a different type of criticism when she was asked why Wonder Woman, as a feminist icon, wears that skimpy, sexy outfit.

Apparently, this is still a problem.

The director’s response:

I think that that's sexist. I think it's sexist to think you can't have both. I have to ask myself what I would apply to any other superhero. This is fantasy, and it's not for anyone other than the person having the fantasy. I, as a little girl, took a huge amount of delight in the idea that for my power and my ability to stop that bully on that playground, I can also look like Lynda Carter while doing it (via Comic Book).

We should also point out that fan response to comic book costume changes has been less than positive, so fan reaction has contributed to this version of the classic costume.

In other news – and here we enter spoiler territory – there’s a new Wonder Woman clip in which you can actually see Ares for about a second (at 21 seconds). Check it out here!
