Despite all the rumors and the DC Extended Universe track, Wonder Woman still managed to make history. The movie debuted at $103 million in the US and has grossed $798 million worldwide since June 2. It’s still in theaters and selling tickets, even two months after its release.
At this year's San Diego Comic Con, Warner Bros. announced that there would be a Wonder Woman sequel, which really wasn’t news to anyone after the first movie’s phenomenal success. The studio even announced a December 2019 release date.
It was the lack of an announcement about Patty Jenkins’ return as director that was a surprise. Previously, Jenkins had said that she had plans for the sequel. After the SDCC reports said that she and Geoff Johns had already started working on the story, so why hadn't she signed yet?
According to Deadline, Jenkins was still in negotiations with the studio, but those talks may have ended a couple of days ago. It’s expected that the director will receive a paycheck commensurate with that of any male director who scores such a big hit at the box office.
Jenkins scored the best opening ever for a female director. In addition, Wonder Woman’s current worldwide box office take puts her in first place over all live-action movies directed by women.
When Jenkins finally reaches a deal with Warner Bros., it’s highly likely that she’ll be the highest-paid female director ever.
And the wait will be well worth it! But how long will fans have to wait for some official news?
