Sounds like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is Getting a Rewrite

We've still got a long wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which means any and all information relating to the film is at a premium right now. So, this little update we have from franchise star Sean Gunn, brother of director James Gunn, is worth paying attention to. Per Sean Gunn, as reported by Comicbook.com, it looks like the script for the third entry is going to get a rewrite before filming actually begins.

"I know, you know"¦I think my brother may do"¦he may do another pass, in which case I would read that version," Gunn said. It's incredibly common for scripts to go through many, many drafts before filming begins, so this is hardly worth getting worried about. However, it's worth considering what might have changed over the past year or so that might affect the story for the highly-anticipated sequel.

Originally, James Gunn was set to begin filming the sequel in January of this year. Gunn had confirmed that he was returning to write and direct the third installment back in April 2017 ahead of the release of Vol. 2. However, last summer, some old, offensive tweets composed by Gunn resurfaced online, ultimately leading to the filmmaker being fired by Disney from the gig.

Gunn moved on to direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros., only to be rehired later for Guardians 3 by Disney. So, originally, the movie would have come much sooner. But Marvel had to shift its plans a bit, given the situation with Gunn. That means, the events of Avengers: Endgame, as well as any other movies released between now and when filming gets underway on the next adventure with Star-Lord and the gang, will need to be taken into account. That could cause some minor changes to the story in Vol. 3.

So when will we see this sequel finally get off the ground? James Gunn is getting ready to shoot The Suicide Squad in the coming months. That movie is set to arrive in August 2021. At the very least, even if Gunn makes quick work of it, he couldn't possibly begin working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 until late next year. Plus, Marvel has already revealed its entire Phase 4 lineup, which runs through 2021. So, at the very earliest, we'd see the movie arrive in 2022.

Just as a little refresher, here's the synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

"Peter Quill and his fellow Guardians are hired by a powerful alien race, the Sovereign, to protect their precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket has stolen the items they were sent to guard, the Sovereign dispatch their armada to search for vengeance. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter's parentage is revealed."

Plot details for the third film are totally under wraps at this point. All we really know is that the core cast is all expected to return. Beyond that, it's a waiting game.

So what do you think? Are you excited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? What new characters would you like to see introduced? Sound off in the comments!
