Martin Freeman and Marvel's Civil War

Of all the actors to appear in Captain America: Civil WarMartin Freeman's role still remains a mystery. And we are wondering why. If he will indeed play a small character, why is the studio trying so hard (and succeeding, for the matter) to keep his movie identity a secret? If he will portray a recurring role, which will have a major impact in the MCU, what role could that be?

Well, let's take a look at what we knew until now and the new information Martin Freeman himself has just provided.

Martin Freeman's character - teased during Age of Ultron?

The day the news broke that Martin Freeman was cast in Captain America: Civil War also marked the first rumor that appeared about his character. In this way, the rumor is based on a certain scene from Avengers: Age of Ultron and on nothing else than Martin Freeman's nationality.

Ulysses Klaue

Ulysses Klaue

So when Ulysses Klaue is first introduced in the second Avengers movie, we see him talking with a potential buyer. The scene is swiftly ended by the arrival of the twins. However, we do find out that he talked with a minister, presumably a British one.

Connecting the dots, the rumor said that Martin Freeman will be that shade British government official, interested in what Klaue had to offer. And that is his supply of vibranium. However, one shouldn't have counted the minister as being an evil-doers.

In this way, the supposed British minister was trying to secure a deal with Klaue in order to make a bigger one in the future. And that deal was supposed to be all about the vibranium Klaue possessed.

As said, this didn't make the supposed Martin Freeman character an evil one. The vibranium is, in this way, a tool to be used against superheroes. How come? Because even the mightiest superheroes can be corrupted or must be held accountable for their acts.

Age of Ultron was filled with teases about next year's Captain America: Civil War. And if that supposed British minister was actually trying to secure a deal for the vibranium, then at least one government was thinking about a Registration Act.

At least, this is what that rumor said. But given the new information provided by Martin Freeman himself, we can consider this rumor debunked. But only part of it - check out on the next page the reveal made by the actor!

During a recent interview, Martin Freeman revealed how much time he has spent and he will spend on the Civil War set. In this way, he said that he has already finished shooting a big part of his role, with a couple of more days following until the end. And he also mentioned something else: “I have 2 more days to go, so it’s a relatively small part. Within the framework of the film, he is ambiguous. I like that you can’t tell if he is a goodie or a baddie. But he works for the government and a part of his job, is to keep the superheroes and powers in check. Unless they fire me, it’s a role that will carry on.” (via Comic Book Movie).

So, in a way, the rumor was actually right. Martin Freeman will indeed portray a government official, whose only job will be to supervise the superheroes. So, in a way, him dealing with Klaue for vibranium isn't such a big stretch.

A small, recurring role

HYDRA

In a different interview, following the one quoted before, Martin Freeman also revealed for whom he is actually working: the American government. So, in a way, we can say that we know that he will deal with Iron Man against Captain America next year. Or don't we?

Well, the actor also said something else, something which is very intriguing: "So you're not quite sure which side he's on. It looks a little bit like he's playing one game when actually he's playing another. It's the kind of character I like because it's ambiguous and because you don't know whether he's good or bad." (via Comic Book Movie).

That's a twist. Care to bet that he works for HYDRA?

In this way, many speculate that Martin Freeman will portray Everett K. Ross, who is in the comics the connection between the US government and Wakanda. Sure enough, just like with any adaptation, this character will suffer some changes from what the hardcore fans know from the comics.

But, essentially, you can expect for him (and Martin Freeman as well) to return in the MCU in 2018, in Black Panther.
