After 17 years of wearing the claws, Hugh Jackman is finally going bid farewell to his popular X-Men character, Wolverine, with next year's Logan. But the first official trailer has already made it clear that this movie’s Wolverine is very different from what he has appeared to be in all of the previous ones. He has aged significantly and doesn't heal as quickly as he used to.
In a recent interview with Empire, Director James Mangold talked about their attempt to humanize the irresistible mutant in Logan:
The goal was to make something human. We made an effort to scale back on the gloss and greenscreen.
The director's words certainly line up with what we’ve read on the second page of Logan's script, which notes, "If you're on the make for a hyper-choreographed, gravity defying, city-block destroying CG f*ckathon, this ain't your movie." Agreeing with that sentiment, Hugh Jackman adds:
It’s essential you see this as the story of a man who is struggling with mortality and legacy and whether the world has been better off with him or without him.
Jackman's character isn't the only clawed mutant in Logan - the movie will introduce Laura Kinney, aka X-23, who will be portrayed by The Refugees star Dafne Keen. Mangold seemed pretty impressed with the child actress' performance:
If anyone could steal a movie from Hugh Jackman, it would be Dafne. She carries, all the time, a slight strangeness.
The director concluded by praising Hugh Jackman, without whom he could "never have gotten this done". He also promises that we will see the actor "doing some of the best work" he’s ever done.
