Jay Hernandez Responds to SUICIDE SQUAD Reviews

“Suicide Squad” had a huge opening day, but critic reviews from earlier this week were not kind to the David Ayer film. While fans and critics seem to disagree on how the DC feature turned out, the film’s stars have started responding to the negative feedback.

While talking to Digital Spy, Jay Hernandez, who plays El Diablo in “Suicide Squad,” had this to say about the critics’ take:

“Yeah, I am bothered about it. I think it sucks. Obviously we worked hard and tried to give the fans what they wanted. It’s weird that some of the criticism I heard was that it was ‘too much like a comic book,’ in terms of you have these characters being objectified like Harley Quinn. There are just certain elements that are just part of being a comic book. If you’re trying to portray that on a film, you have to stay true to that, because if you don’t, the fans of the comics are going to be offended.

In many reviews, critics have pointed out that the rumors of discord between Ayer and the studio seem to be confirmed on screen. There have been several reports of Ayer shooting the film with the dark tone found in “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” only to have Warner Bros. demand a more lighthearted take, a la “Guardians of the Galaxy” and other MCU movies. These contradictory visions make “Suicide Squad” hard to pin down for viewers.

Hernandez has been highlighted in early reviews as a breakout star, and his performance has been praised as one of the better parts of “Suicide Squad.” This didn’t seem to make him too happy, though, as he concluded his Digital Spy comments with, “The critics can kiss my ass.”

What did you think of “Suicide Squad”? Are the critics being too harsh?
