Jason Momoa In Talks To Play Lobo In The New DC Universe

Jason Momoa may not be playing Aquaman for much longer, but he may live on in the new DC Universe. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is poised to be the actor’s final turn as Arthur Curry, as almost none of the actors from Zack Snyder’s version of the DCU will be reprising their roles after James Gunn and Peter Safran launch their reboot. This, according to a new report from Variety. But the report also reveals that Momoa has been in talks to take on another role in Gunn and Safran’s universe: Lobo

Indeed, after months of rumors, it was revealed in the report that Momoa has had conversations about appearing as Lobo in the new DCU. There is no word yet on how that might play out, though it’s suggested he could show up first in 2025’s Superman: Legacy. Either way, it seems Warner Bros. wants to stay in business with Momoa, they’re just going to be moving on from his version of Aquaman. Similarly, Gal Gadot won’t be returning as Wonder Woman, nor will Ben Affleck as Batman. For the most part, Gunn and Safran are going for a hard reset. Only a few actors will return, including John Cena in Peacemaker season 2 and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

The report, by and large, was about alleged chaos that has brewed behind the scenes in getting the Aquaman sequel together. The messiness of the situation only seems to add fuel to the fire that is prompting a reboot of the DC Universe under Gunn’s leadership. Gunn, who directed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, will be at the helm for Superman: Legacy, which will be the first film as part of the new DCU.

Here is the synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

“Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.”

Lobo has long been rumored for a solo DC movie. At one point, Michael Bay was tapped to possibly direct the film. It never came to pass, but Momoa has long been connected to the role. When news of the DCU reboot came about, rumors swirled that the actor would finally get to play the anti-hero. It looks like that may finally come to fruition.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 20.
