Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War to Take Place Four Years Apart!

Kevin Feige confirms a four-year-gap between the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War!

The release dates may be roughly a year apart, but the events of Avengers: Infinity War will take place around four years after those of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We had a hint about this when director James Gunn revealed that the upcoming sequel would be set in the year 2014, which is a few months after the events of the original movie. But now, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has provided full confirmation.

During a recent interview, a CinemaBlend correspondent asked Feige whether Avengers: Infinity War would address events witnessed by Star-Lord and his team during the four years since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. His response:

Yeah. They will have evolved slightly, in some recognizable ways. But, really, they’ll be the Guardians, and dealing with the shit storm they have to deal with.

We assume that Baby Groot would undergo changes that will become obvious in Avengers: Infinity War. Over four years, he should have grown enough to just be Groot. Other than that, we could also see how various relationships among the members have evolved. And, of course, some costume updates should be evident.

Feige confirmed the four year gap, but he added that dates in the Marvel Cinematic Universe aren’t set in stone:

Yeah, knowing that outside of the Guardians franchise, we don’t necessarily always date the movies. You don’t always know, we don’t say, “2012, 2013…” We do in the Guardians, because you do the math and 1988, and it’s 26 years later. But we never say, “Oh, this takes place in 2018, this takes place in 2017.” But it was important for the story that James wanted to tell that they’re still relatively fresh in their new group.
