Godzilla: King of the Monsters – Filming Begins, First Synopsis Revealed

Warner Bros./Legendary's MonsterVerse may not have stomped the box office so far, but it’s steadily moving forward. In 2014, Godzilla made almost $530 million worldwide and is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (74%), and Kong: Skull Island made $566 million worldwide and received slightly better reviews (76% on the same review aggregator). And on May 22, 2020, the two kings will meet in battle in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Godzilla (Wikipedia)We found Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island a bit underwhelming, but they were still fun, so the news that cameras have begun to roll for 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters made us smile. Michael Dougherty (Krampus) is directing, and Zach Shields (Krampus) wrote the script, so it appears that the studio is going for a new style, especially after director Gareth Edwards made Godzilla a secondary character in his own movie.

The King of the Monsters cast is also quite formidable: Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Peter Jackson's King Kong), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Sally Hawkins (returning to the MonsterVerse as Vivienne Graham), Ken Watanabe (returning as Dr. Serizawa), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Bradley Whitford (the awesome Get Out), Thomas Middleditch (voicing Jerry), O'Shea Jackson, Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Aisha Hinds (Star Trek: Into Darkness).

Rodan (FilmStruck)

Along with the announcement that filming for Godzilla: King of the Monsters has begun, Warner Bros. released the film’s first synopsis:

Mothra (Heroes Wikia)

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species"”thought to be mere myths"”rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance (via Screen Rant).

King Ghidorah (WikiZilla)

So this movie will be packed! We’re hoping to actually see the MUTOs – all of whom were teased in Kong: Skull Island’s cave paintings – in a confrontation, which didn’t happen in 2014's Godzilla!
