Doctor Strange Needs 3D to Fully Appreciate, Says Marvel Studios Head

As its trailers have proudly shown off, Doctor Strange will be a strange, new experience indeed for Marvel fans, not only for its introduction of magic to the MCU but also in taking the spectacular visual effects the studio is known for to a whole new level. In fact, it’s so trippy that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recommends watching the movie in 3D to fully appreciate it.

Trailers for Doctor Strange were not shy in giving us a taste of mind-warping visuals when it showed reality being bent and altered, with shots of the world folding in on itself and seemingly being mirrored, like Inception on ‘roids.

Feige spoke with Collider about how integral 3D is to Doctor Strange and that their struggle was in making sure its visuals still work in 2D. "There are sequences of the film that 3D is actually necessary to tell the dimensional story that is happening through visuals," he said. "And we're now finding ourselves in VFX reviews going, "˜Okay we know this is perfect for 3D, this is built for 3D, but the story's gotta work in 2D so how do we adjust it so it still works in 2D?' But the 3D is going to be amazing."

Director Scott Derrickson further commented on how audiences are recommended to see the movie in 3D, saying, “The 3D in the movie accentuates the trippiness of it all. The Steve Ditko, Stan Lee comics were all about these weird visuals and we really used those as a source for the visuals in the movie, and yet there’s a textural quality to all of them as there was in the way that Ditko designed those early visuals that in 3D are just gonna give you more a sense of being even more [present] and more real.”

Previous Marvel movies were not really known to be impressive 3D offerings, continuing the decreasing popularity of that ‘enhanced’ film viewing experience, but it seems Doctor Strange hopes to buck that trend, as its already stunning 2D visuals are only secondary to its 3D effects.

Fans can see check this out for themselves when the San Diego Comic-Con trailer (or upcoming ones) hits theaters as previews before other 3D films.
