Right from the first season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, Brett Dalton's Grant Ward has been a captivating character. First introduced as a SHIELD black ops specialist, this original character was later revealed to be a Hydra double agent, who was trained by John Garrett. So many characters have come and gone, but Ward has remained a threat to Phil Coulson and his team.

With Agents of SHIELD Season 3 set to return one week after the midseason break, producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen have revealed Grant Ward's new villainous identity. They have confirmed to Nerdist that Dalton's character is Marvel Comics supervillain Hive! Jed and Maurissa shared:

As we saw in the midseason finale episode, Ward is back on Earth, but he's definitely not the same Ward who went through the portal to the alien world.

Hive of Agents of SHIELD will have his own unique twist!

Hive was introduced back in May, 2009, in the Secret Warriors #2 issue. The character was created in the Gehenna laboratories of Hydra. But of course, things are different in Agents of SHIELD. While Hive didn't have a dual identity in the comic books, Ward is going to be transformed into the supervillain in the ABC series.

According to those in charge, Brett Dalton's Hive will have his “own unique twist”. They promise that the character will be "very different" from what we've seen so far. They went on to add:

We will see similarities that pay homage to the original character, but fans will see that Hive is taking an exciting new direction in the world of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.

Today isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Ward’s transformation into Hive. A few days ago, someone at ComicBookMovie made mention of it. It was reported that Gemma Simmons actress Elizabeth Henstridge had shared the info during her appearance at Wizard World Portland.
