In 2012, The Avengers treated fans to one of the most exciting post-credits scenes ever: a smirking purple guy who’s tested the strength of Earth's superheroes. The purple guy was Thanos, one of the most famous Marvel supervillains who at one time wiped out half of the universe with a single flick of his fingers. At that time, many said that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was heading toward an Infinity Gauntlet adaptation, and they weren't wrong.
It’s five years later, and we’re as close as we can get to the Infinity War. Almost all of the pieces are in place, and the Mad Titan himself has decided to rise and search for the Infinity Stones. So far, however, we’ve learned nothing about his powers, although everyone seems to fear him (except for Ronan, who wields an Infinity Stone). Maybe one of the movies leading up to Avengers: Infinity War will reveal those powers.

Will it happen in Thor: Ragnarok? We don't know, but that makes sense, especially if we’re to believe that Hela is in fact the personification of Death in the MCU. Thor: Ragnarok won't just see Thanos unleashed; it will also present fans with another important puzzle piece: the Mad Titan’s reason for seeking the Infinity Stones.
In the comics, Thanos sought these powerful artifacts because he became infatuated with Death. To prove his love, he used the power of the gems to wipe out half of the universe, because nothing says I love you like mass murder. Will the same happen in the MCU? It could, especially if the Hela-is-Death rumor is true.
When an interviewer from Collider asked about the possibility of introducing Death as a character in the MCU, Kevin Feige’s answer was quite vague:
[His motives] will be similar to what they were in the Infinity Gauntlet in various ways. I guess that's all I can say about that.
