Captain Marvel: Hiring a Female Director is Definitely a Priority!

Hiring a female director for Captain Marvel is a priority for Marvel!

The rumored shortlist of potential directors for Captain Marvel features four names right now, and each of them is a woman. This is not surprising at all, considering the fact that studios these days intend to put female directors in charge of movies that have female characters as the main leads (Take Wonder Woman, for example - Warner Bros. was looking for a female director right from the beginning). And there's also the fact that Marvel Studios has appointed two female scribes - Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve – to pen the Captain Marvel script.

But is hiring a female director for the first standalone female superhero movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe a priority? It is, indeed! While speaking to Variety recently, Marvel President Kevin Feige confirmed that they are looking for a female director to call the shots on Captain Marvel:

Having a female director at the helm to tell the story of a woman who is also our most powerful hero by far is very important to us.

The directors who are reportedly being considered for Captain Marvel are Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, Lorene Scafaria, and Rebecca Thomas. While Feige had previously claimed that they were going to have a director by the end of summer, it now looks like they are content with taking their time in reaching a final decision. After all, the movie isn't rolling into theaters any sooner than March 8, 2019 - so, no need to rush.

A few weeks ago, Feige described Carol Danvers as "the most powerful character" in the MCU. When asked what makes the character so powerful, the Marvel head-honcho responded:

If you had the collector cards of the Marvel characters and you could see the power levels, she would be off the charts compared to anyone that we've previously introduced in a film.

As for why Brie Larson has been cast as Captain Marvel, Feige explains:

With Captain Marvel, who has powers that approach a level that we haven't seen before in our films, you need to counter- balance that by finding somebody who is also very human and very relatable and can get into a groove with the audience, where they're willing to see her fly through the sun and punch a moon away from a spacecraft. At the same time, we need her to land and have relatable flaws.

He concluded by saying that the Academy Award winning actress is someone we are "going to want to go on this journey with", just like we do with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).
