Batman v Superman: Explaining Wonder Woman

During an interview with Empire Magazine, Zack Snyder, Gal Gadot, and producer Deborah Snyder talked about Wonder Woman's role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Among others, the director revealed how she came to be in the movie from the first place, her age, her past as a superheroine, and others.

Thus, Zack Snyder said that Wonder Woman was originally not planned to be in Batman v Superman. However, he and the powers that be said that they should throw her in, because the story organically led into the Justice League. Not only that, the way the plot evolved required her to be in and needed just a single solo flick until the Justice League Part One. Basically, “the whole concept came of, ‘Let’s not save anything. Let’s try it all.’

This doesn't sound too reassuring, at least for us. When someone says, let's not save anything it sounds as if saying, let's cram all the superheroes into one movie and see what happens. We don't know what happens, but we guess we'll see.

Continuing the interview, Gal Gadot said that the superheroine is about 5 000 years old by the time Batman v Superman begins. She used to be a superheroine, but she has retreated, for unknown reasons just yet. The actress said that she saw what mankind can do and she believed that the humans aren't worthy of being saved. This is an interesting take, which makes us wonder what convinced Wonder Woman to leave mankind behind.

Talking about Diana Prince and Wonder Woman, the actress said, “they have the same attitude. Although when she is Diana she tries to blend in, she is not too outgoing. I don’t want people to think she is perfect. She can be naughty.

Deborah Snyder picked up and said that Wonder Woman's sexuality plays an important role, being in a way her power. However, she is also a feminist - from what we can guess, the latter feature will play an important part in Batman v Superman.

But both of these characteristics are going to be at the core of the Wonder Woman solo flick, which is due in 2017: "The way we have approached it, especially in the stand alone movie, that is definitely there. Looking back and doing an origin story – and it is a period piece – see the role of women through history. There is a great source of humor in that now. It is so unbelievable you can’t even fathom it. You are still making a statement, but having some fun with it.

Humor? Well, that does sound a bit weird and that does sound like something some feminists won't like it too much. We guess we'll form our opinion in less than 2 months, when Batman v Superman hits. What is more interesting, though, is that the Wonder Woman solo flick will be an origin story, which means that we’ll jump through history until World War I.

The same Empire Magazine issue also features quite a few new pic.
