In an unexpected turn of events, a Batgirl movie is the latest addition to the DCEU's ever-expanding roster. Even more unexpected, Joss Whedon, who made history with Marvel's The Avengers, has already been announced as the project’s director. Batgirl will enter active development along with other surprise additions to the DCEU roster, including Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, The Batman, Nightwing, Black Adam, and Man of Steel 2.

Variety, the source of this information, reported that Joss Whedon will also write and produce the Batgirl movie. The director previously expressed interest in directing a movie featuring a super heroine, specifically Black Widow. And everyone knows that he also wrote a script for a Wonder Woman flick in 2007.

It’s too early to know which actresses the studio might consider for Batgirl. Alicia Silverstone portrayed the character in Batman and Robin, and Yvonne Craig brought her to life in the 1960s Batman series. It’s also worth noting that this will be the third female-centered DCEU movie, after Wonder Woman and Gotham City Sirens.

Lastly, Variety reported that the project was conceived in the past month. So at this point, we don’t know whether the character will make an appearance in any of the upcoming DCEU flicks. But, given the fact that the Gotham City Sirens script hasn't been written yet, and that the The Batman script is being rewritten from scratch, anything is possible.
