10 Best “Hulk Smash” Moments In Movie History

Everybody loves the Hulk. After all, what’s not to like about a big, green force of pure rage who smashes the hell out of everything in his path?

The character has appeared in four movies since the turn of the millennium – 2003’s Hulk, 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, 2012’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron – all of which were part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, apart from the first one with Eric Bana in the lead role.

Both Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo have portrayed the character in the three MCU movies to date and, collectively, the three actors’ versions of the character have been depicted smashing all kinds of opponents and inanimate objects to pieces.

This article will list the best examples of those scenes. Here are the ten best “Hulk smash” moments in movie history (in chronological order)!

Smashing The Tanks (Hulk)

Although we’re somewhat loath to include anything from this movie (it’s pretty awful), there is a pretty cool scene in 2003’s Hulk in which Eric Bana’s version of the character smashes up a load of tanks.

It comes when he’s on the run and Sam Elliott’s General Ross sends the military after him. The Hulk does things like throw one tank into the distance, tear the top off another and use it to smash what’s left of it, then bends another tank’s gun in such a manner that it is pointing at the driver inside.

The scene was the best depiction of the Hulk’s might in the entire movie – particularly the throwing of the first tank – and really emphasised how invulnerable he was (he took a shell being fired at him like the average human would have taken being hit by a tennis ball).

Smashing Emil Blonsky (The Incredible Hulk)

In 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, General Ross had Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky enhanced with the same “super soldier” formula that was used on Captain America and set him against the big green monster.

After daring to go up against the Hulk – a fight in which Blonsky expertly dodged his attacks with great agility – he got overly cocky and approached him, before mocking him by asking “is that all you’ve got?”

Taking that as a challenge, Hulk showed Blonsky exactly what he was truly capable of and kicked him forcefully into a distant tree. The impact was extremely violent and every single bone in Blonsky’s body was shattered. Thanks to his super soldier upgrade, however, he was fully healed and ready for action within a matter of days.

Smashing Abomination’s Face (The Incredible Hulk)

Hulk’s first major villain in the MCU was the Abomination – an equally monstrous being created when Emil Blonksy was injected with Bruce Banner’s gamma-irradiated blood, after having already been given the super soldier treatment.

The two super-strong beasts fought on the streets of New York at the movie’s climax and it was a very destructive affair. Abomination had the better of the fight for most of it, but Hulk won and he certainly got a few punches in prior to his victory (which came when he choked Abomination out using a large chain).

There was a particularly great “Hulk smash” moment when Abomination was on his back and the green monster repeatedly punched his face/head into the ground – although Abomination did subsequently repeat his earlier line of “is that all you’ve got?”

Smashing Thor (The Avengers)

Hulk and Thor are, of course, pals now after fighting together in the Battle of New York and the Battle of Sokovia – and they’re also going to team-up in Thor: Ragnarok – but their relationship got off to an extremely hostile start.

A fight between the pair took place on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier when an explosion triggered by one of Hawkeye’s arrows traumatised Bruce Banner to the extent that he lost control and transformed into the Hulk.

The pair had a violent altercation in which Hulk bloodied Thor’s nose and received a shot from Mjolnir to his face, but the fight came to an abrupt end when a fighter jet distracted Hulk, he attacked it and ended up falling to the ground. Of course, the best “Hulk smash” moment came later, when Hulk effectively ended their earlier fight by humorously punching Thor off screen.

Smashing The Leviathan (The Avengers)

Arguably, the outright greatest moment of Hulk smashing something in a movie came when he first Hulked-out at the scene of the Battle of New York.

Having last been seen fighting with Thor on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Bruce Banner arrived to assist his fellow Avengers in fighting off Loki’s alien army – which consisted of Chitauri foot soldiers, Chitauri on flying vehicles and giant Chitauri Leviathans.

When Tony Stark drew one of the Leviathans towards the Avengers (with the accompanying quote of “I’m bringing the party to you”), Bruce Banner was told by Captain America that it would be a good time to get angry. He revealed that he was “always angry”, voluntarily transformed into the Hulk on the spot, and killed the gigantic beast with a single powerful punch.

Smashing The Chitauri (The Avengers)

Following Hulk’s one-punch killing of the Leviathan, the Chitauri readied themselves for battle with him and the Avengers. But the Avengers did the same thing in return.

Captain America dished out the orders to his teammates; Iron Man was to keep a lookout in the air and send anything that tried to head out of New York back in, Hawkeye was to keep a lookout from the rooftops and take out Chitauri with his arrows, Thor was to bottleneck the portal through which the aliens were arriving, Black Widow was to work with Cap on the ground and Hulk was simply told to “SMASH!

He did exactly that. He jumped on to the side of a nearby building and began smashing the aliens, embarking on a rampage that would see him easily wrecking hordes of them.

Smashing Loki (The Avengers)

Without any shadow of a doubt, the most entertaining example of Hulk smashing in a movie was when he gave Loki what he deserved in The Avengers.

During the Battle of New York, Hulk found Loki at the top of Stark Tower – where he was overseeing the battle – and charged towards him. Loki was having none of it and tried to talk Hulk down by proclaiming that he was a god, telling the Hulk that he would not be bullied by him.

It didn’t work. At all. Hulk grabbed the Asgardian trickster and proceeded to repeatedly smash him off the floor – hard enough to damage it severely, nonetheless. He then walked away, like a complete and utter bad-ass, and said the iconic words “puny god” (probably the best line in the entire movie). Awesome.

Smashing The Bunker (Avengers: Age Of Ultron)

The opening of Avengers: Age of Ultron saw the titular heroes raiding a HYDRA base that was occupied by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker.

The villain sent his troops out to defend the base – all of whom were equipped with Infinity Stone-powered weaponry – but the Avengers were far too powerful for them. All of the team members had their moments in the spotlight, with Hulk smashing his opponents left, right and centre.

His most memorable “Hulk smash” moment in this scene, however, came when some of the bad guys were attacking the Avengers from inside a bunker. Black Widow said “does somebody wanna deal with that bunker?” which resulted in Hulk appearing out of nowhere and running right through it, smashing it to pieces. Black Widow said “thank you” and that was that!

Smashing The Hulkbuster (Avengers: Age Of Ultron)

The truth is that the Hulk ended up getting his ass kicked in the fight against Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armour AKA Veronica, but he certainly managed to do some smashing of his own during what was an absolutely epic back and forth battle.

The encounter happened in Avengers: Age of Ultron when the Scarlet Witch’s powers affected Hulk’s mind to the point that he went crazy. Tony Stark was forced to call in his specially made anti-Hulk armour and the pair fought in an African city.

Hulk’s attacks were powerful enough that Stark had to summon extra parts for his armour during the bout – specifically when Hulk used a large yellow metal pole to penetrate the armour from behind. Of course, the big green monster would later be knocked out – which was quite the achievement on Stark’s part.

Smashing Ultron (Avengers: Age Of Ultron)

In the final battle of Avengers: Age of Ultron – which is known as the Battle of SokoviaHulk had one of the starring roles yet again. Ultron’s mind was connected to thousands of drones and the green hero tore through them like butter.

He punched, kicked, threw and even bit them in their droves – and at one point several of them even ran away from him out of fear of being smashed – but his best moment came in a brief encounter with Ultron’s primary body.

The robotic villain had just been blasted by the combined efforts of Iron Man, Thor and Vision and was attempting to explain his actions. However, before he had a chance to do so, Hulk punched him far into the distance.
